Do I need to take a test?
No, currently there are no legal requirements to undertake a test to drive a scooter. However, it is recommended that an introduction to the scooter is taken when delivered, which Cumbria Mobility will be happy to assist you with.
What is the weight capacity of the scooter I am interested in?
Each scooter has its own individual weight capacity, so we would check this for you from the manufacturer’s information, but as there are many categories available, we should be able to find something suitable for you.
Do I need lights on my scooter?
If you plan to travel at night, then lights would be an essential part of your scooter, especially if you are travelling on the road.
What is the range of the scooter?
This is dependent upon the scooter. Again, like the weight capacity, we can inform you of the range from the manufacturer’s information which comes supplied with each scooter. Generally, they range from between 8 to 30 miles.
What maintenance is involved?
New mobility scooters require very little maintenance, other than their annual service. It is recommended that certain steps are undertaken to ensure their longevity.
These involve keeping the scooter clean and dry to avoid any corrosion and storing it in a dry place away from the weather, always charge your battery to the manufactures guidelines, and always adhere to the manufacturers guide for any issues you may have.
Do I need insurance?
Currently there is no legal requirement for you to insure your mobility scooters. It is however recommended to take insurance to cover against an accident or if you become the victim of a crime.
Can I get a car and a scooter on the Scheme?
You can only be on the Car Scheme or the Wheelchair and Scooter Scheme, not both at the same time.
Can I drive my scooter on the road?
Only Class 3 powered wheelchairs or scooters are allowed on the road and you need to check with your dealer that the vehicle has been fitted with all necessary requirements (lights, horn, indicators, rear reflectors, etc). Class 2 vehicles are not vehicles and are not allowed on roads, other than to cross them.
Can I get a scooter even though I have a car on the Scheme?
If you have a car on the Scheme you must wait for your agreement to end before you enter into an agreement with the Powered Wheelchair and Scooter Scheme. You can't have two agreements at the same time.
Do I need a license to drive a scooter?
No license is required to drive a scooter.
Does my scooter have to be registered with the DVLA and do I need a tax disc?
Class 3 powered wheelchairs or scooters must be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). To find the nearest office you can call 0870 243 0444. Once registered, you will be given a nil duty vehicle licence (tax disc) which you will need to display on your vehicle.

What happens if I lose the keys for my scooter?
Please contact your dealer who will be able to provide you with another set. (There may be a cost).

What's the difference between a class 2 and class 3 scooter?
Class 2 powered wheelchairs and scooters are only suitable for riding on pavements or footpaths, and have a top speed of 4 miles an hour.
Class 3 vehicles include powered wheelchairs and scooters and these are suitable for riding on roads, and have a top speed of 8 miles an hour. These also have a switch to travel at 4 miles an hour on pavements or footpaths.
Class 3 vehicles are not legally defined as motor vehicles, therefore the user does not have to have a driving licence or take a driving test. However, class 3 vehicles need to be registered for road use and display a nil duty tax disc. Information can be found in post offices that issue tax discs, or telephoning 0870 243 0444.
When does the DWP start to take the money?
DWP only start holding the allowance from the estimated delivery date.
How soon does the DWP reinstate the money once an agreement ends?
Money should be reinstated as soon as the agreement finishes.
