What's included with your lease:
It really is that simple – we take part, or all, of your allowance directly from the Department for Work and Pensions, or the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency and you get all this – there are no catches!
There are 5 main categories of products available to lease through Motability. To help you decide which one might be best for you we've listed a quick guide below, but always speak to your dealer as they will be able to advise you on which may be best for you, and your lifestyle. Powered wheelchairs and scooters come in 2 different Classes - Class 2 and Class 3 (Class 1 refers to manual wheelchairs). The Class of a product determines where it can be used, for more information please see the Direct Gov website.
Small boot scooters
These usually dismantle into a few parts to allow you to stow them in a car boot. Try the scooter with the car you travel in most frequently to make sure it fits and that the person who needs to lift it can do. Boot scooters often have a lighter frame to make them easier to transport, but this also means they will carry less passenger weight and have a limited battery range.
Summary:
• Small, compact and lightweight
• Not suitable for use on the road
• Fold or dismantle for storage and/or transportation
• Can be used around the home
Medium
Medium sized scooters are generally sturdier than smaller scooters, but are not as easy to fold or dismantle, so may be more difficult to transport in a car (speak to dealers to find out which models you can dismantle). You can use the Class 3, 6mph scooters on the road if they are taxed.
Summary:
• May have a greater travel range
• Some have a greater weight capacity
• Many have a wider turning circle than smaller models
Large
Class 3 scooters are classified as road legal by the Department of Transport, meaning they require road tax (provided free of charge by the DVLA). They can travel up to 8mph on the road (4mph limit for pavements), and are suitable for longer distances and rougher surfaces. As they are larger, they need more storage room and are much heavier – therefore cannot be transported in a standard car.
However they are also sturdier and generally have larger seats and can carry more weight.
Summary:
• Can be used on roads*
• Maximum speed of 8mph (4mph limit on pavements)
• Generally have a greater battery range, meaning they can travel further between charging
• Complete with lights, indicators and horn
• Generally larger and require more storage space
• Not easily transportable
*You are legally allowed to use Class 3 scooters on all roads, as long as they are taxed, including dual carriageways (but not motorways) but be careful as traffic can be travelling up to 70mph.
Powered wheelchairs - standard
These powered wheelchairs come fitted with standard seats and controls, although these will still vary between individual models. Many models will fold or dismantle to allow you to transport them in a car.
Summary:
• Some adaptations cannot be added to these wheelchairs
• Available through all of the Motability powered wheelchair dealer network
Powered wheelchairs - custom-built
Most powered wheelchairs come in a standard design but in some cases your disability might require you to have your powered wheelchair custom-built. Due to the fact that these are custom made for you, we have 11 specialist dealers who operate nationwide to provide the knowledge and support you need. If you think that you may need a powered wheelchair specially made,. Some dealers may accept NHS vouchers towards the cost of any advance payment - you can discuss this directly with them.
