Wheelchairs and Walkers

Wheelchairs

Rigid Wheelchairs are wheelchairs that do not fold but are generally smaller, stronger and even more lightweight than folding ones. Some are made from Titanium and weigh less than half the weight of some folding ones. The footrests on these chairs have been replaced by a single footboard and these chairs are generally used by people who require the use of a wheelchair for prolonged periods.

Folding frame wheelchairs are conventional wheelchairs, constructed with an X-shaped brace at the centre that allows the frame to fold sideways. Folding an X-Frame wheelchair is easy, although the stainless steel models can be bulky and heavy. However, there are several models available that are made from aluminium, which is considerably lighter to lift.

Transit Wheelchairs, which require someone to push, now come with swing-away, detachable footrests, detachable armrests, and half-folding backrests that reduce the overall size and weight for transportation. Some models also have attendant operated brakes for greater attendant control.

Self-Propelled models feature all the characteristics of other wheelchair types, except the attendant operated brakes but have the additional feature of quick release wheels to further reduce the size and weight.

Specialist Wheelchairs known as Prescription Chairs which can be tailored to suit the needs of individual clients, especially those that need a variety of accessories to alleviate the complexities of their condition. These accessories include elevating leg rests for people with limited or no knee flexion and a variety of head and body supports for those with balance difficulties. For these type of chairs Cumbria Mobility will carry out a detailed, no obligation assessment to determine the most suitable chair for each individual client and in the most extreme cases we can liaise with qualified Physiotherapists or Occupational Therapists to ensure the client receives the correct equipment.
